The Metropolitan Libraries Section aims to be a platform primarily for libraries of cities with 400,000 or more inhabitants, although libraries serving wide and diverse geographical areas may also be included. Members exchange ideas and information on a range of professional topics including: library networks, buildings, automation, training, research, public relations, and service to special groups.

The Metropolitan Libraries Section, formerly the Round Table of the International Association of Metropolitan Libraries (INTAMEL), dates its origins to 1966, when Prague City Library organized an international conference to celebrate its seventh anniversary and invited city libraries from other countries to attend.
